Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of the most commonly asked questions. If you have a question that is not listed below, please contact me via the contact form at the bottom of the page.

What is placenta encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing and drying the placenta after birth, then grinding it into powder and placing it into easy-to-take capsules. It’s a traditional practice used by many mothers to support recovery and balance during the postpartum period.

Why do women choose to encapsulate their placenta?

Many women report feeling more balanced, energized, and supported after taking their capsules. Commonly mentioned benefits include improved postpartum energy, balanced mood, support for milk supply, higher iron levels, reduced postnatal bleeding, uterus returning back to pre-pregnancy size faster, losing baby weight faster, overall faster and better recovery after having baby. These effects are based on personal experiences of thousands of women worldwide.

How is my placenta handled?

I am an IPEN trained, fully qualified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist. I also have a Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety for Manufacturing certification, a Level 2 HACCP qualification and I am qualified in Infection Prevention and Control. Your placenta is treated with the utmost care, respect, and attention to hygiene. I follow strict food safety and infection-control standards throughout the process, using medical-grade gloves, sanitized surfaces, and separate equipment for each client. I am fully insured with BGI. Read more about our safety protocols here.

How does the process work?

1. Book your encapsulation in advance (ideally before 36 weeks). 2. When you reach 37 weeks I provide you with a Collection Kit free of charge. 3. When you go into labour your birth partner notifies me and takes your Collection Kit with you. 4. After you give birth, your birth partner or midwife contacts me for collection. 5. I collect your placenta within 24 hours of birth (usually I am with you within 3 hours of birth). 6. It is prepared, dehydrated, and encapsulated (usually within 48–72 hours). 7. Your finished capsules are delivered back to your home via Royal Mail Tracked 24. Tracking details are provided on posting.

What are the different preparation methods?

I offer two methods: Traditional (steamed) – gently steamed before dehydration; Raw method – dehydrated without steaming, for maximum nutrient retention. If you’re unsure, I can advise based on your preferences and health circumstances.

Is placenta encapsulation safe for everyone?

Placenta encapsulation is safe for most people, but may not be suitable if you have certain infections (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B/C), if the placenta was sent to pathology, or if it was not stored safely. Safety is always the top priority. Please read more about our safety procedures for placenta encapsulation here.

How should the placenta be stored after birth?

The placenta should be kept cool and refrigerated as soon as possible after birth. If a fridge is not available, place it in the sealed storage container and store in the Collection kit with ice packs. If collection is delayed for any reason (highly unlikely), you may be asked to freeze your placenta.

How many capsules will I get?

Each placenta produces roughly 80–200 capsules, depending on the size and preparation method. Capsules are delivered in a labeled jar with dosage recommendations.

How do I take the capsules?

Most clients start with 2 capsules, 2–3 times per day for the first week, then taper down. All placenta capsules come with full dosage instructions explaining how to get the best out of your pills. Store capsules in a cool, dry place (not the fridge). The capsules are the same size a the Pregnacare Multivitamin.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are uncommon, but some people report mild digestive changes in the first few days. If you experience any discomfort, stop taking the capsules and contact me for advice.

Is placenta encapsulation medically approved?

Placenta encapsulation is a traditional, complementary practice. It is not a medical or pharmaceutical service.

What is included in the service?

Provision of a Collection Kit included for free with all bookings, 24/7 personal collection  of your placenta, safe hygienic preparation, capsules in labelled package, optional add-ons (tincture, salve, keepsake), and care instructions. Return tracked mail of your remedies using a 24 hour Tracked service. Tracking details are provided on posting.
